Who is Libby Lehman?

Libby Lehman had a 40 year career in teaching quilting and giving quilt lectures all over the world. Her quilts were outstanding examples of contemporary artistry and original. Her quilt Joy Ride was chosen as one of the 100 Best Quilts of the Twentieth Century. Libby was chosen as the TQS Legend for 2010.

Over the decades, she was recognized internationally for her intricate quilts and trend-setting techniques. She was a beloved teacher and successful author. She mentored and encourage many fledgling quilting professional. Her use of threads and her knowledge of machine mechanics set her apart from the ordinary quilter.

In April 2013, Lehman almost died after suffering a ruptured brain aneurysm followed by a massive stroke. She remained in the hospital, unconscious and on life support, for many months. Eventually she was moved to rehabilitation facilities and nursing homes. The stroke left her unable to speak or walk. At one point, she requested hospice care.

From this dark period Libby chose to rise up and asked to reinstate therapy. By sheer will and determination, along with tremendous support from her husband Lester, family members, and friends, Libby managed to recover. While she cannot do many of the things she once could, she has an excellent quality of life that includes travels to art galleries, movies, and visits to their vacation home at Port O'Conner, TX. She has become a pro at putting together jigsaw puzzles.

Since this life-changing event, Libby no longer quilts. Still, her influence is felt throughout the quilting industry and she remains one of the most beloved celebrities in quilting. She is not only a fine example of a legendary quilters, but she is also a tremendous example of how the human spirit can overcome tremendous adversity.
